Chipotle was established around 1993, in Denver, Colorado by Steve Ells who is still serving as co-chairman and chairman of Chipotle. He is also co-CEO and chairman of the company.
McDonald’s purchased Chipotle in 1998. This enabled the Chipotle company to rapidly grow to over 500 locations in 2005.
Chipotle’s mission statement reads Food with Integrity which states they use local and organic products whenever they can. Additionally, their cows are not raised with any synthetic hormones.
Due to these quality requirements of their food supply, Chipotle prices are on the higher end of the fast-food/fast-casual industry. But their portions of food tend to be quite substantial compared to Mexican-inspired fast-food restaurants.
